Life as a Gardener on an Electric Cargo Bike in Edinburgh

In a city like Edinburgh, where historic streets meet modern urban living, garden maintenance can look a little different. At The Cycling Gardeners, our work combines professional gardening with sustainable transport — and that means much of our day is spent travelling between gardens on an electric cargo bike.

But what is it actually like to be a gardener working this way?

Starting the Day: Packing the Bike

A typical morning begins by loading the cargo bike with the tools needed for the day’s garden maintenance visits. Electric cargo bikes are designed to carry surprising amounts of equipment. Hedge trimmers, hand tools, compost bags, and green waste sacks can all fit securely into the cargo area.

Because space is valuable, every tool has to earn its place. Gardeners quickly learn to plan carefully: the right equipment for pruning, weeding, lawn care, and general garden maintenance must all be packed efficiently.

Once the bike is loaded and the battery is checked, it’s time to set off through the streets of Edinburgh.

Travelling Through the City by Bike

One of the biggest advantages of an electric cargo bike is how easily it moves through the city. Edinburgh’s neighbourhoods are full of narrow streets, traffic restrictions, and busy parking areas. For gardeners in vans, simply finding a place to park can add significant time to a job.

By contrast, a cargo bike allows gardeners to travel directly to each garden without worrying about parking. Cycle lanes, quiet streets, and shared paths make it possible to move quickly between garden maintenance visits in areas like Marchmont, Bruntsfield, Stockbridge, and Leith.

The electric motor helps when climbing Edinburgh’s famous hills. Even with tools and green waste on board, the assistance makes it possible to travel efficiently across the city.

Arriving at the Garden for Garden Maintenance

When a gardener arrives by bike, clients are often curious. The cargo bike tends to attract interest from neighbours and passers-by — especially when they see a full set of professional gardening tools emerge from what looks like a bicycle.

Once the tools are unloaded, the work itself is familiar to any professional gardener. Garden maintenance can include: Weeding borders and beds, Pruning shrubs and climber, Hedge trimming, Lawn care and edging, Seasonal tidying and planting, The difference is simply how the gardener arrived.

Quiet, Low-Impact Garden Maintenance

Using electric cargo bikes also means that The Cycling Gardeners can provide garden maintenance with a lighter environmental footprint. There’s no engine idling outside the house, and no need for large vehicles occupying residential streets. This approach fits particularly well in Edinburgh, where many neighbourhoods value quieter streets, cleaner air, and sustainable local services. For gardeners, travelling by bike also means spending more time outdoors and less time in traffic. Moving between gardens becomes part of the day’s rhythm rather than a stressful commute.

Gardening Designed for the City

Urban gardens in Edinburgh come in many forms — small back gardens, shared tenement greens, townhouse courtyards, and larger suburban plots. Electric cargo bikes allow gardeners to reach all of them while carrying the tools needed for professional garden maintenance. This model works especially well for regular maintenance visits, where gardens benefit from consistent care throughout the growing season.

By combining cycling with professional gardening, The Cycling Gardeners aim to provide a service that suits the character of the city: practical, efficient, and environmentally responsible.

A Different Way to Be a Gardener

Being a gardener on an electric cargo bike changes how the working day feels. Instead of driving between jobs, the journey becomes part of the work itself — riding through tree-lined streets, passing parks and gardens, and arriving directly at the next garden to care for.

For us, it’s simply a better way to work in Edinburgh.

If you’re looking for garden maintenance in Edinburgh, The Cycling Gardeners provide regular and one-off gardening services delivered by cargo bike across the city.
